When you buy gold then through carats it is specified. For example that if pure gold is 24 carats,  then it refers to  18 parts of gold and 6 parts of other elements. If white gold is 14 carats then it refers to 14 parts of gold and 10 parts of other metals. It is measured that pure gold is 999.99, 18k gold is 750, white 14k is 585.
